Acknowledgment of Indigenous peoples’ land is a traditional custom that dates back centuries and is used today. Now, land acknowledgment is an honest and historically accurate way to recognize Indigenous people who originated in the place you live, have your business or are hosting an event. Acknowledgments can be presented verbally or visually.
Historically, Indigenous people were displaced and lost their livelihood. It’s important we know the history of the land we inhabit and who was here first. When the past of Indigenous people is acknowledged, it’s honored. This is one step toward increasing education and strengthening the Indigenous voice.
