Metlakatla developing historical archive

by The 100 Companies

Community members of Metlakatla, Alaska’s only Indian Reserve, have launched a historical archive to preserve Metlakatla’s history and culture. The archive contains historical documents, photographs and recordings that provide insight into the community’s past, such as traditional stories, songs, dances and more.

Community members worked together to gather and digitize materials for the archive. The project aims to foster a sense of pride and connection to the community’s heritage and is open to the public for viewing.

When the archive is finished, there are plans for youth to interview Metlakatla elders to learn about the family history of Annette Island.
