The homeless population is one of the most high-risk groups when it comes to COVID-19 in Alaska. Factors like poor hygiene, lack of nutrition and spending excessive amounts of time outside or in crowded shelters make the homeless susceptible to disease, according to Covenant House Alaska.
To combat the virus and keep people safe, Bean’s Cafe has turned Sullivan Arena and Ben Boeke Ice Arena into temporary homeless shelters, providing more space and hopefully slowing the spread of coronavirus.
