Juneau native Colonel Archie Van Winkle (1925-1986) was a U.S. Marine who served in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, earning 19 medals including the Medal of Honor.
His platoon in Korea faced “a devastating barrage of deadly automatic weapons and grenade fire” at night. Realizing part of his squad was separated, Van Winkle ran through enemy fire to reunite his troops despite a wound that made his arm useless.
He was then hit in the chest with a hand grenade which caused extensive damage, but he refused evacuation and continued to shout orders to his platoon.
