Pre-earthquake activity found in central Alaska

by Michael Polzella

University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute professor Carl Tape and colleagues witnessed accelerating activity before a 2016 earthquake at Minto Flats, and this research discovery may help to detect early warning signs for earthquakes.

According to Science Daily, this was not the first time Tape had seen low-frequency earthquake activity in the area. By 2016, Tape had high-quality stations on top of the fault zone. Later, Tape witnessed a long-duration signal that gave a glimpse into what was driving the nucleation phase. This leads Tape to believe there is something special about the Minto Flats fault zone.
