Alaska Native filmmaker wins national award

by The 100 Companies

Iñupiaq filmmaker Alexis Sallee’s directorial debut was awarded first place in the national 2019 She Directed Filmmaker Contest, selected by voters and judges from more than 400 entries.

Sallee’s short film “Who We Are” is about how an Iñupiaq artist connects to her ancestral lands through painting. The film honors the strength and legacy of indigenous people.

“We don’t often see Alaska Natives on screen,” said Sallee. “And when we do, it so rarely depicts who we are as people today. This film is meant to empower Alaska Native people. I’m thrilled to continue telling Alaska Native stories through film.”
