REAL ID is meant to improve security standards for state-issued IDs. Alaskans don’t need to worry just yet, though, since the state has an extension until Jan. 1, 2019, allowing federal agencies like TSA to accept Alaska driver’s licenses and identification cards.
On Jan. 1, 2019, Alaskans will be able to apply for a REAL ID, which costs $20. It will also be possible to travel using another form of ID, such as a passport. On Oct. 1, 2020, everyone in the United States will need a REAL ID for domestic air travel.
