A true sign of the beauty of spring in Alaska is not the gray sludge melting from winter, but rather gray whales returning to the state’s waters. Gray whales travel thousands of miles from California to Alaska from February to May before spending the summer feeding in shallow waters.
A chance to see these massive creatures is a big draw in April for visitors to the state’s seaside towns. To spot these whales, look for their signature slate gray color and a streamlined body that lacks a dorsal fin.
Gray whales begin their migration back south from Alaska in October.
