Built in 1916, the Historic Anchorage Hotel is the city’s only hotel on the National Register of Historic Places. Anchorage, now Alaska’s largest city, had 3,000 residents at that time. Construction on the Alaska Railroad began there only one year earlier.
As the population of Anchorage grew, so did the hotel. Eventually, an annex was added, and the two buildings were connected with a sky bridge.
The original hotel structure was torn down, and the remaining building endured many owners before it was restored in 1989, once again becoming one of the most historic places to stay in Anchorage, Alaska.
