It’s no secret that Alaska is surrounded by some of the most remote and harsh waters in the world. It is these unique conditions that were the catalyst for the first kayak.
For thousands of years, the Indigenous people of Alaska needed a vessel that enabled them to maneuver these waters for survival. They developed the first kayak, translated in Inuit to “hunter’s boat,” to hunt and fish the arctic waters. The first boats were crafted with animal skins.
While people today use kayaks for recreation, the vessel’s rich history is grounded in culture, innovation and respect for the sea.
