Lady Liberty turns 140

by The 100 Companies

On July 4, 1884, “The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was presented to Levi P. Morton (the U.S. minister to France) in Paris. The 225-ton statue was then disassembled and loaded onto a French Naval ship for its passage to New York Harbor.

The towering 22-stories-tall gift, presented to the United States from the people of France to mark their alliance during the American Revolution, spans 305 feet and one inch from the ground to the very tip of Lady Liberty’s triumphant flame.

October 2024 will mark 100 years since the historic site was designated a National Monument.
