In Alaska, fishing is about landing the big one. This summer, fishers can compete for bragging rights as well as cash and other prizes while they give back to local communities.
In Anchorage, the Slam’n Salm’n Festival benefits the Downtown Soup Kitchen Hope Center. In Kenai, the three-day Kenai River Classic raises money for fish habitat restoration, education and management. In Juneau, the profits from the Golden North Salmon Derby support secondary education scholarships.
Make sure you know the rules of each fishing derby before you cast a line so you don’t miss out on the prizes.
