On June 19, 1865, the United States Army freed more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans. Today, this date is known as Juneteenth and it is recognized as the oldest national holiday commemorating freedom from slavery.
Alaskans – as well as visitors to the Great Land – have the opportunity to enrich themselves at upcoming Juneteenth events near them, which include:
• Fairbanks: Greater Fairbanks NAACP’s Juneteenth Celebration Festival (June 17)
• Anchorage: Anchorage Citywide Celebration (June 17-18)
• Anchorage: Alaska Black Caucus and Anchorage Chamber’s “Make it Monday” Juneteenth Celebration (June 19)
