June 19 marks 157 years since the liberation of thousands of enslaved men, women and children of Galveston, Texas. Today, it’s recognized as Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
Alaskans are honoring African American culture and the end of slavery at the Official Juneteenth Anchorage Citywide Celebration June 18-19.
The community is invited to the Park Strip in downtown Anchorage to learn about this historic day of freedom through activities and speeches from local dignitaries. The family-friendly event will include live entertainment, food and more each day from 1-6 p.m.
