The news: Gov. Bill Walker recently endorsed the memorializing of Alaska’s military heritage and exploration of creating an Alaska Military History Museum.
The why: Alaska has a complex relationship with the U.S. military. Since 1867 when Russia turned Alaska over to the U.S. Navy, understanding the military’s role in Alaska has been difficult.
What’s next? Members of the Alaska Military History Museum Advisory Task Force will be appointed by Gov. Walker to explore the idea of forming the museum. Members may include veterans, veteran’s organizations, educators, historians, enthusiasts and more, as well as museum professionals and archivists.
