The World Eskimo-Indian Olympics arrive July 13-16 with games that “display the preparedness one needed for survival,” when seal hunters had to be strong and endure pain in -60 degree temps. Challenges include:
• Ear pull – Ear “tug of war” between two contestants, stamina against pain is tested, reminiscent of withstanding the brutal conditions of the North.
• One- and two-foot-high kick – Reenacts a messenger who’d run to the village and kick both feet into the air to signal a whale catch.
• Kneel jump – This showcases quickness and control, as needed during ice hunting. Daytime attendance is free; evening tickets are $10-$15.
