Experience the Alaska tundra in Anchorage

Visitors to the Anchorage Museum get to experience life on the Alaska tundra, courtesy of a new art exhibit. One of the world’s leading contemporary artists created the movable sculpture of a pingo out of salvaged Alaska yellow cedar.

Pingos are formed in the Arctic when permafrost piles into a small hill and collapses. This sculpture, part of the exhibit “Murmur: Arctic Realities,” is meant to be interactive. Visitors are actually encouraged to get inside and move its walls to simulate a pingo’s life cycle. The installation will travel internationally for several years but make its permanent home in Anchorage.
