Seventeen-year-old Tatiana Korthuis is about to start her freshman year at the University of Alaska Anchorage. However, this long-time ANSEP student already has a jump-start on her STEM career.

During ANSEP’s Summer Bridge component, Korthuis spent the first part of her summer gaining career experience as a paid intern for the United States Geological Survey. She worked alongside professional scientists on the USGS Alaskan Gyre research vessel.

They conducted seabird, fish and plankton surveys to study how environmental change is impacting ecosystems. Korthuis then served as an intern for Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Washington, D.C.
