This Black History Month, we’re taking a look back at the stories and accounts of Black Alaskans. In his book, “Black History in the Last Frontier,” in partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage and the National Park Service, Dr. Ian Hartman shares the tales of Black explorers, whalers, Gold Rush hopefuls, military men – and the list goes on.
Like many who moved to Alaska, most of the state’s early industry hopefuls did not stay. Others made Alaska home.
Whether exploring migration or community-making, sharing Black stories in Alaska – the struggles and the triumphs – leads to greater inclusivity for all.
