Just south of Anchorage: Surf only bore tide in the far north

The Turnagain Arm bore tide in the Cook Inlet near Anchorage is one of the largest in the world. It’s the only bore tide in the far north. If you catch it at its peak, it could be 10 feet tall moving 15 miles per hour.

A few days every month during the spring and summer months adventurous surfers can catch the wave and sometimes ride it for miles. The water is cold, but there’s no experience quite like it. When the conditions are right, there may be 40 people trying to catch the wave.
