Oct. 11 is National Coming Out Day, an opportunity for the community to celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ), or even as an ally.
Coming out still matters and has lasting effects. When people personally know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to change their attitudes. For those coming out, it is a time to break free from the chains of fear and show that they can be everything they want to be. Those coming out stories become powerful tools for others to use.
