This International Women’s Day, we’re introducing you to a few iconic women in our state’s history.
1. Elizabeth Peratrovich was a member of the Tlingit-Haida nation. Peratrovich is credited with getting the country’s first anti-discrimination law passed by the State of Alaska in 1945.
2. Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the historic Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1985 – proving anything boys can do, she could too.
3. Cornelia Hatcher brought women’s suffrage to the territory of Alaska. Her petition would help Alaska women gain the right to vote in 1913, seven years before the U.S. ratified the 19th amendment.
