Katmai National Park and Preserve celebrates its centennial in 2018, with special events planned throughout the summer to mark 100 years in existence. Visitors and locals will find opportunities for exploration and education about Katmai’s history.

Originally established as Katmai National Monument to protect the region around the 1912 Novarupta eruption, today, the park has become a resource for geologists to learn about that eruption and share that knowledge worldwide. The park is also popular for bear viewing and hiking. On Sept. 22, Naknek will hold the closing centennial celebration with demonstrations, Alaska Native cultural performances, food and family activities.
